So called “Campus Religious Freedom Bill” SB175 passed in Kansas has nothing to do with religious freedom and everything to do with prejudice and bigotry directed toward LGBTQ youth
Statement from Campus Pride Executive Director Shane Windmeyer on passing of SB 175:
I was born in Kansas and went to college in Kansas. My family lives in Kansas, so this is personal for me and Campus Pride. SB 175 becoming law under the guise of ‘campus religious freedom’ is a falsehood concocted by religious zealots including the Kansas Governor and directly harms the safety of all students. It has nothing to do with religious freedom and everything to do with prejudice and bigotry directed toward LGBTQ youth.
The law endangers LGBTQ youth on campus who are already at risk of harassment and research shows fear for their own safety. It creates an unsafe environment for learning and academic freedom. It is negligent and shameful for the State of Kansas. Youth and families want to attend and pay for college where they can feel welcome and safe. The State of Kansas has sent a clear message against LGBTQ youth and families. When one young person is threatened by discrimination, then all young people are impacted by that fear and lack of safety on campus.
Undoubtedly, Campus Pride will hear from many more LGBTQ youth in Kansas who will need help, support and will face undue discrimination. We stand ready to assist these youth and will work steadfast to change this unfair, unjust law.
