Social Justice Mini-Grant highlight: April Lichtman, former Campus Pride intern

Social Justice Mini-Grants for Activism

In honor of Campus Pride’s 20th Anniversary, we are awarding Social Justice Mini-Grants for Activism to fund student-led projects on college and university campuses. The program offers grants of up to $600 to student activists involved in social justice work. Campus Pride announced the first round of mini-grant recipients in August. LGBTQ college students are encouraged to apply now for the next round of Social Justice Mini-Grants for Activism. To learn more, visit campuspride.org/ActNow.

April Lichtman, University of Connecticut

April Lichtman, Social Justice Mini-Grant for Activism recipient, created a workshop performance of a play with a cast almost entirely of LGBTQ artists, most of them trans women. The play, “Camp Iris,” features seven trans women at a transgender support sleepaway camp in Maine. Lichtman used the mini-grant stipend to compensate her actors and commission artwork to promote the event.

Hear from Lichtman about her experience as a Social Justice Mini-Grant recipient:

“After the performance on January 9, we received so many words of encouragement from the audience. The show reached over 190 people in one night, which is probably the equivalent of selling out a black box theater twice,” said Lichtman.
