Statement from Campus Pride on the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol

“We categorically reject and admonish the riots yesterday in Washington D.C., as violent action is in opposition to what we stand for as an organization.”

What creates positive change? Here at Campus Pride, we ask this question every day to ensure that our work leaves a positive impact on the world. We believe that if we incorporate peaceful advocacy into our programming and resources, we can set an example for our #lgbtq student leaders to use on their campuses. The insurrection that took place yesteday at the US Capitol building is an affront to all of us.

For 20 years, Campus Pride has educated college communities about how to protect their #lgbtqyouth. In the past few years, however, we have focused a lot of our education on intersectionality of queer identities. We wholly support the Black Lives Matter movement as well as other calls for social justice from marginalized groups. We categorically reject and admonish the riots yesterday in Washington D.C., as violent action is in opposition to what we stand for as an organization.

We cannot help but notice the stark difference in law enforcement’s response to yesterday’s acts of insurrection against our nation, compared to the response to peaceful protests to protect Black lives, trans lives, and queer lives of color across the nation.

Campus Pride will always be a safe space for queer and trans bodies of color. In times like these we must educate each other and actively stand against social injustice. For more information on our programming focused on intersectionality, please visit some of our QTPOC resources.
