TAKE ACTION: National Coming Out Day October 11, 2015

Campus Pride celebrates National Coming Out Day, Sunday, October 11, 2015 with events, education and outreach October 10-15, 2015

Campus Pride is proud to celebrate National Coming Out Day (NCOD) on Sunday, October 11, 2015.  NCOD began after the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. On October, 11, 1987, half a million people participated in the March which was the second such demonstration of its kind. From the march a number of LGBTQ organizations were established including the National Latino/a Gay & Lesbian Organization (LLEGÓ) and AT&T’s LGBTQ employee group, LEAGUE.

Momentum continued months after the march and National Coming Out Day was established to celebrate coming out and gain supporters for LGBTQ people. The thinkers behind this idea were Rob Eichberg, a founder of the personal growth workshop, The Experience, and Jean O’Leary, then head of National Gay Rights Advocates.

Every year since October 11, National Coming Out Day continues to promote a safe world for LGBT individuals to live fully and authentically.

There are many ways that you can take action on National Coming Out Day to support LGBTQ individuals. Show your support during the week of October 9 through October 15, 2015.

– Search #NCOD on social media and join in on the conversation,
– Share your campus NCOD events on social media using @CampusPride + #NCOD on Twitter and Instagram,
– Share your coming out story with Campus Pride on YouTube & Facebook,
– Contact your local LGBTQ community center or support group to see if there are events to attend,
– Tell the world that your identity is not a form of sin with the #LGBTQNotSin Campaign,
– Visit your campus LGBTQ student group or resource center to see if there are any events you can participate in or volunteer for,
– Support LGBTQ people in your community through love, kindness and provide your ear to listen.

Also, attend or volunteer at one of Campus Pride’s LGBTQ-Friendly College Fairs where colleges are coming out, too. Campus Pride will be visiting a city near you — celebrate #NCOD with us:
