The Campus Pride Safe Space Training Program is a nationally recognized program that provides training and signage for institutions committed to supporting LGBTQ students. A Safe Space Program is one of the measures of a supportive campus on the Campus Pride Index (

While we are not offering in-person trainings at this time, we are offering a two hour online version of the Safe Space Training.  This online training prepares individuals to understand the importance of a Safe Space, learn terminology and LGBTQ identities and how to be a Safe Space.   Participants will receive an official Campus Pride Safe Space certificate with their name upon completion of the full two hour training.

Creating a Safe Space for LGBTQ Inclusion

LGBTQ people face higher rates of poverty, stigma, and marginalization, which puts them at greater risk for higher rates of hate motivated violence, sexual assault, discirimination and harassment.  Nearly a quarter of LGBTQ young people face harassment and discrimination on their campus today, even higher rates for LGBTQ youth of color and trans/nonbinary young people.

For over 20 years, Campus Pride has been the pioneering LGBTQ leader within higher education for LGBTQ inclusivity and safety.   The nationally recognized Campus Pride Safe Space training equips participants with the knowledge, awareness, skills to be an advocate/ally and take action to foster a safe space.

Participants will learn and understand key moments in LGBTQ civil rights as well as the State of LGBTQ Equality when it comes to equity and inclusion in the United States. In addition, individuals will better understand terminology and key components toLGBTQ identity.  To conclude the training, participants will explore and identify ways to be an advocate and an ally for LGBTQ people and how they can create a Safe Space.  Everyone receives a personalized Campus Pride certificate with their name to be visible as a Safe Space.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Learn and understand key moments in the LGBTQ civil rights movement.
  2. Explain the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
  3. Define terminology used to describe sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
  4. Explore and identify ways to be an advocate/ally for LGBTQ people.
  5. Discuss how you can take action as a Safe Space.

Participants completing the program will be certified as a Safe Space Trainer by Campus Pride and given license to use the Campus Pride Safe Space logo with permission included to incorporate the campus logo.  The campus can then create customized Safe Space signage and logos for display in offices, classrooms, and other campus spaces.
