Campus Pride holds fourth event as part of HBCU Sports Inclusion Summit series on Wednesday, September 20

Fourth event takes place on campus of Texas A&M University featuring Out Gay Athlete and former NFL Football Player Wade Davis

Campus Pride continues its HBCU Sports Inclusion Summit series with its fourth event on Wednesday, September 20 on the campus of Texas A&M University in the MSC Auditorium.   Hosted by Prairie View A&M University, the event will feature a keynote by Out Gay Athlete and former NFL Football Player Wade Davis. Resources will be shared from Campus Pride to better improve athletic spaces and create inclusive policies, programs and practices in sports.

“Often, HBCUs are overlooked, especially in athletics, when it comes to work for LGBTQ inclusion,” said Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride. “The summit offers a deeper level of support from the community and is a way to highlight the positive progress and continue the journey. Campus Pride is committed to helping provide additional support and the necessary resources for HBCUs like Prairie View A&M University,”  said Windmeyer.

The principal focus of the summits is to focus on HBCUs in the South and ways to better equip these campuses with LGBTQ resources.  According to Inside Higher Ed, while many HBCUs in more urban areas have dedicated spaces for gender-neutral bathrooms, only roughly 30 percent of HBCUs have LGBTQ clubs affiliated with the universities. “Investing in sports inclusion at HBCUs and helping foster a more welcoming, affirming space for LGBTQ individuals on campus is our primary goal.” said Windmeyer.

Campus Pride is the leading national educational organization for LGBTQ and ally college students and campus groups building future leaders and safer, more LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities. The organization provides resources and services to thousands of college students and nearly 1400 campuses annually. Learn more online at CampusPride.org.
