"The feeling that I was alone – unique – with what I assumed to be an affliction was one of the largest contributing factors to the very deep and real depression I suffered as both a child and young adult. It wasn't until I began to hear stories of my peers that I came to truly examine, accept, and celebrate my own sex-and-gender identity. Thank goodness for this book. It's going to save some very important lives."
Kate Bornstein,
Author of Gender Outlaw
and My Gender Workbook

"I wish a book like this had existed when I was a student in the late 60's....it could have given me the knowledge that I was not alone in my sexual identity struggle....and given me the strength to be out and proud and productive at a time when I was so confused and depressed. AND, I would have loved to give it to my parents."

"Inspiration for LGBT Students & Their Allies could literally be a lifesaver for those who read it. Many LGBT students struggle with feeling that they are alone- this book not only allows them to learn from the experiences of others who have been through the process, but to be inspired by them. This book not only reaches out to students who are LGBT, but also to their allies- a powerful yet often overlooked presence on campus. This book takes something that is still too often seen as a problem- being "different"- and turns it into an asset and something to be celebrated."
Candace Gingrich, LGBT activist
and author of The Accidental Activist
"Everyone, young or old, needs heroes and role models. This book is filled with them. But unlike many heroes and role models, these wonderful people are not inaccessible, or high on a pedestal. They are ordinary folks doing extraordinary things. Read their words -- and prepare to be inspired!"
Dan Woog,
Author of Jocks: True Stories of America's Gay Male Athletes
and Jocks 2: Coming Out To Play.
"WOW! Tears of recognition, identification, and understanding will definitely flow in many people who read these vignettes. Inspiration for LGBT students and allies comes at a time when ALL of us in the community need to remember the human side of who we are. These stories will truly inspire us. Buy extra copies of this book because you will want to keep one and give others away!"
Wendy Stubbs, MA, University of South Dakota,

"Wow, such powerful voices that need to be heard but more often go silent. This collection is wonderful not only for students but also for student affairs professionals who wish to get a glimpse into the lives of some of the students they serve. Of course it will be a great companion to students who are struggling with their own identity and for those allies who support them. Great job, thanks."
Judy Albin,
National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Chair,
GLBT Knowledge Community And Senior Associate Director,

"No matter how many barriers we overcome, how many firsts we enjoy, how many opportunities we demand access to, we must never forget the fear and shame that many young people feel as they struggle with their sexual orientation. It's hard, and it's scary, and it's life shaping. We have a responsibility to demonstrate to them that a joyous, rewarding, achievement-filled life can be theirs. If this book boosts the self-esteem of one young gay man or woman, or if one friend chooses an embrace over awkwardness, then this book has served its purpose."
T.J. Sullivan,
Managing Partner, CAMPUSPEAK, Inc.
"As a previous student leader myself, and in my present work with LGBT student leaders, I know our fight is one that is seldom appreciated. It is work that longs for this type of encouragement. Inspiration for LGBT Students & Their Allies is an uplifting book that will move any student to understand why our continuing battle for equality is an important one"
M Chad Wilson, Co-Founder, Campus PrideNet
and graduate of Appalachian State University
"These stories will touch your heart and soul – and remind you of what it means to live with courage every single day."
Elizabeth Randazzese, MSW,
Co-Author of Inspiration for Student Leaders & EmPower X! Coach
"Succinctly written and engaging, these stories will be, without question, enormously supportive of LGBT students. Equally impressive will be the value of the stories to allies, who often want to be helpful, but are confused and fearful of saying the wrong thing."
Pamela W. Freeman,
Co-Author, Out on Fraternity Row and Secret Sisters
Associate Dean of Students, Indiana University
"Who of us doesn't need to be uplifted and affirmed in dealing with something as insidious as homophobia? These stories will touch your heart and strengthen your resolve. They are funny, insightful, moving, thought-provoking, and, most importantly, heart-felt. You will carry their images into your days and they will make a difference in your life."
Doug Bauder,
Ordained Pastor for the Moravian Church
and Coordinator of Indiana University's
GLBT Student Support Service Office
"Since the beginning of humankind people have gained strength, hope and power from joining together to share their personal stories. This book follows that work. As we spend time with this book, our isolation dissolves and we find ourselves joining with others in this great circle of love and support."
Gregg Cassin, Inspirational Speaker,
gay Dad, Co-Chair of AIDS, Medicine & Miracles
"I think this book is an invaluable resource that should be on every campus and used in cultural diversity courses and trainings. The stories are moving and empowering. They provide a source of information for those outside the LGBT community and a source of strength and support for those within the LGBT community."
