Finding what you need online can sometimes be a daunting task as a LGBT and Ally student leader.  The following is a select list of national organizations with one or more specific resources geared toward LGBT campus issues.  Let this be a starting point for your Campus Q Search!

Campus Pride

Campus Pride represents the only national organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer college environment for LGBT students. The online site contains helpful articles on issues facing LGBT and ally student leaders and campus groups.  The site also features a Dean’s List to meet other LGBT students across the country and resources for various LGBT and ally advocacy, support and leadership issues.

National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education

The National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education works to achieve higher education environments in which LGBT students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni have equity in every respect. The organization supports professional staff of LGBT Office/Centers and advocates for policy change, program development, and establishment of LGBT Office/Centers. Online there are valuable “Frequently Asked Questions—FAQs” as well as a listing of all the campuses with professionally staffed LGBT Office/Centers.

The Point Foundation

The Point Foundation provides financial support, mentoring and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. The application process is open to all LGBT students nationwide regardless of level of education. Students may apply online to a variety of scholarships including the mtvU and the Matthew Shepard Foundation awards. Application period traditionally starts January 1. All applications must be received by March 1. Decisions are made by May 1.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation

The Matthew Shepard Foundation provides support for diversity programs in education and helps youth organizations establish environments where young people can feel safe and be themselves. Online resources include reading materials, videos, educational materials and regional events.  There are also links to LGBT sensitive homeless shelters, drop in centers, local PFLAG organizations and LGBT counselors.

The Trevor Project

Help Line: 866-488-7386

The Trevor Helpline is the only national 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention hot line aimed at gay and questioning youth. The Trevor Helpline is geared toward helping those in crisis, or those wanting information on how to help someone in crisis. Managed by partners at San Francisco Suicide Prevention, the Trevor Helpline calls are handled by highly trained counselors and are free and confidential.

Stop The Hate!

Stop The Hate! works nationally to prevent and respond to bias and hate crimes on college campuses.  Along with valuable online resources and links, the organization also provides the only train-the-trainer curriculum for colleges and universities to prepare faculty, staff and students to fight bias and hate on campus.

Human Rights Campaign

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. The National Coming Out Project is part of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The project provides both printed and online resources and information to support LGBT people including a Resource Guide to Coming Out and an online resource for Coming Out in Communities of Color. The project is an extension of National Coming Out Day, which is celebrated every October 11. The National Coming Out Project help s to facilitate those events by offering information about how to put on an event and materials, such as posters, stickers and literature.

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force was the first national LGBT civil rights and advocacy organization in the country. The organization has tremendous grassroots political resources as well hosts the annual Creating Change Conference for LGBT and ally activists. In 2003, NGLTF published a national campus climate study, which documents experiences and perceptions of anti-LGBT bias and harassment, along with levels of institutional support for LGBT people.

Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN)

The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network focuses its educational efforts on K-12 schools and supporting teachers and students in regards to issues surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.  GLSEN also offers an array of online resources for pre-college LGBT and ally youth as well as co-organizes the annual National Day of Silence event, which is also planned on several hundred colleges every year. The National Day of Silence is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies.

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG)

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG) provides support to families and friends of LGBT people. PFLAG also advocates on behalf of LGBT people, and offers educational programs to improve the general populations understanding of LGBT people. Online resources from PFLAG include support for LGBT individuals coming out as well as tools for outreach to build LGBT allies.  In addition, there is also financial assistance available through the PFLAG National Scholarships Program. Scholarships are available at the national level and are awarded by many of the local chapters.  Youth can receive both awards if eligible. 

The Lambda 10 Project

National Clearinghouse for GLBT Fraternity & Sorority Issues

The Lambda 10 Project provides LGBT and ally resources nationally to college fraternities and sororities in an effort to create visibility and education for LGBT issues.  Online the website shares valuable resources geared to LGBT students wanting to participate in Greek life--from rushing openly gay to coming out in the fraternity closet. The site also offers a list of current LGBT sensitive fraternal organizations and a Who’s Out List to contact men and women who are openly LGBT in Greek life.

Transgender Law & Policy Institute

The Transgender Law and Policy Institute advocates law and policy initiatives designed to advance transgender equality.  Online the organization maintains a list of colleges and universities with "gender identity or expression" in their non-discrimination policies.

Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund

Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund engages in litigation, education and public policy work to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT people.  Lambda Legal supports colleges and universities with legal issues and educational outreach efforts such as advocacy for campus policies inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation ensures media images of LGBT people are fair, accurate and inclusive. This includes news coverage, television series and even portrayals of gay characters on the silver screen. GLAAD launches various public awareness campaigns in the media like the “Be an Ally & a Friend” series of television commercials for outreach to LGBT youth and straight allies.

Equality Forum

Equality Forum advances national and international gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) civil rights by educating the GLBT community and society at large about GLBT issues.   The organization has high-impact educational programming and content in the form of documentary films, history projects and educational forums to enhance understanding of GLBT issues.  Much of the educational value and content  of these resources deal with past LGBT and ally leaders.
