Campus Pride included in a celebration of the next generation of LGBT leaders at the Vice President's residence
Last Wednesday, Nikita Burks, Jess McDonald, and Shane Windmeyer represented Campus Pride at the Vice President's residence for an end of summer BBQ in celebration of the next generation of LGBT leaders. The day began with a tour of the White House followed by an LGBT policy roundtable. John Berry, the director of the US Office of Personnel Management and the highest-ranking openly LGBT official to serve in the executive branch to date, welcomed leaders from across the country and thanked them for their advocacy efforts. The roundtable included policy updates on international LGBT issues, LGBT legal issues, and LGBT youth issues.
Following the roundtable, Campus Pride met with several young leaders throughout the afternoon. The day concluded with a reception at the Vice President's home, where the group was addressed by Dr. Jill Biden and Vice President Joe Biden. Senior Obama administration officials and national LGBT leaders joined a wide variety of emerging leaders at the event, including college students from across the country, young veterans, artists, and community organizers. Several panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt were on display in the Biden's home as well. For more information, please see the official White House blog post about the event.
