Campus Pride is excited to announce openings for Pride Leaders for the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp to be hosted on the campus of Vanderbilt University, July 17-22, 2012. We are seeking individuals to lead 60 undergraduate students through a comprehensive leadership experience that will enhance their abilities to create change on their campus and beyond.

Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp is the only national camp for LGBT & ally undergraduate student leaders from across the United States. The six-day camp experience develops stronger undergraduate student leaders and safer, more LGBT-friendly colleges and universities. Participants have the opportunity to learn valuable campus organizing skills, coalition building and strategies for creating change on campuses and beyond. Pride Leaders are core components to the curriculum, program delivery and fundraising. Applications are being accepted through January 13, 2012.

Important Requirement: Must have attended the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp and be a current college student or recent graduate. (Recent graduate is defined as within the past 2 years).

Please apply and/or encourage others to apply for the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp. The selection committee takes every measure to select the most diverse camp team as possible. This process is done to ensure that each camper has quality interactions with queer perspectives from all different backgrounds, professions, personal identities, lived experiences and family dynamics.

Camp FAQs
What are the responsibilities of Pride Leaders?
Pride Leader responsibilities of camp include but are not limited to the following: program planning, fundraising, grant writing, promotions, on-site event execution, mentoring campers, program delivery and, most importantly, a belief in the mission of Campus Pride--to build future LGBT & Ally leaders and safer, more LGBT-Friendly colleges and universities.

What are Camp Pride Leader specific job duties?
As a Pride Leader at the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp must agree to:

  • Ensure Campers are on time to all Educational Sessions, Keynotes, and Community Events
  • Assist the Faculty assigned to their small group with small group discussions
  • Be the eyes and ears for Camp Staff for any issue that may arise
  • Assist with setup and cleanup for all Educational Session, Keynotes, and Community Events
  • Ensure Campers are respectful of the Camp Policies and the policies of the host institution
  • Organize and oversee assigned components of camp.
  • Facilitate peer sessions.


What do Pride Leaders gain from the experience?

Camp provides a variety of outcomes for Pride Leaders. They include, but are not limited to:

1. Access to local and national queer resources to further the work on campus and in their local communities
2. Increased presentation and facilitation skills
3. An increased understanding of queer issues in a larger context of social justice
4. Connections to a network of student, peer, and national leaders.
5. A better understanding of the needs of queer student activists from all regions of the United States
6. Increased understanding and recognition of their own identities and privileges
7. An applied experience that includes leadership and identity development models of college age students

How am I compensated for being a Pride Leader?
Pride Leaders are not financially compensated for their work at Camp. Travel (up to $350), meals and lodging are provided for Pride Leaders at camp. Ground transportation to the site and meals while traveling are not covered.

What is the time commitment for Camp?
Pride Leaders are required to participate in two, one-hour conference calls per month beginning in February. In addition, Pride Leaders must arrive in Nashville, TN on July 16 and stay until July 22 in the afternoon.

What is a typical day at Camp?
8:00 a.m. Breakfast
9:00 a.m. Open sessions
9:30 a.m. All student learning session (lead by faculty)
11:00 a.m. Den time (faculty lead small group time)
12:00 p.m. Lunch and Keynote
1:30 p.m. Breakout learning sessions (lead by faculty)
3:00 p.m Breakout learning sessions (lead by faculty)
5:30 p.m. Dinner (dinner discussions lead by faculty)
7:00 p.m. Den time (faculty lead small group time)
8:30 p.m. Night entertainment
10:00 p.m. Pride Leader meeting

What are Camp Pride Leader basic expectations?
As a Pride Leader at the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp, you must agree to:

  • Support, enhance and develop curriculum and eduational activities at Camp.
  • Work collaboratively with Camp Planning Team and faculty.
  • Recruit students to attend Camp.
  • Recruit sponsors for Camp.
  • Raise a minimum of $300 through fundraising (Student registrations cover only a fraction of the overall cost of Camp. This $300 will help to cover part of the Pride Leader  travel, food, accommodations, and other incidentals. Additional money raised will help fund scholarships and to keep costs low for students to attend Camp.
  • Role model respect and civility as well as follow the ACPA Ethical Principles and Guidelines at camp (view http://www.myacpa.org/au/documents/EthicsStatement.pdf).
  •  Regularly communicate with Camp leadership team.
  • Not place their own identities, beliefs, or political stances in the way of student learning and development
  • Empower students to take full advantage of Camp.
  • Make long-lasting connections and friendships with campers, national leaders and Camp faculty.
  • Must remain alcohol and drug free during Camp and all activities leading up to Camp.

Note: When requesting a letter of reference, please be sure to choose someone that is able to comment on the impact the applicant has made at their home institution or in the LGBTQIAA community after attending the Campus Pride Summer Leadership Camp.
